Room 302, Thursday Afternoon

The nice thing about having a room to yourself was that you could do whatever the hell you wanted. Today Alana had a little bit too much restless energy to sit and read, so she played with her music app until it started blaring something that made her want to pogo madly and bounce off the furniture.

She still wasn't a hundred percent sure what a Cambodia was, but whatever. Anything that made her shout along joyfully worked just fine. She hadn't bothered closing her door, but that worked just fine, too.

Dante was bored, and Alana was just down the hall-- and listening to something good, at that.

So it seemed perfectly natural to park himself in her doorway, rap his knuckles on the door, and go, "Hey, if it isn't my favorite planetary expat," he said, "Planning to tourist?"

"Maybe," Alana said, grinning at him but barely pausing in her dance to gesture him in. "The song doesn't make Cambodia sound that great, but who knows."

Dante grinned, but he only half-shut the door as he came in. It'd be sad if the rest of the floor had to miss out on the Dead Kennedys, right? "You know what they say," he said merrily, "It's tough, kid, but it's life."

"S'true," Alana decided, nodding. She was slightly out of breath from the pace of the song. "And I don't want to -- oof -- only see the pretty parts of your planet. That'd be cheating."

"People in the non-pretty parts tend to know how to party," Dante said, flopping down on the bed with a happy oomf. "Though hey, by the looks of it, so do you."

"Never said I came from a pretty part of Landfall," Alana shrugged, flopping down beside him as the song crashed to an ending. "Or that it, y'know, has pretty parts, so. Did you really just claim my bed?"

Well, it wasn't like he hadn't been in it before.

"I'm willing to give up half of it," Dante said, turning his head and flashing her a cheeky smile. "If you tell me about your part of Landfall."

Alana snorted with barely concealed amusement as she turned toward him. "Do I have to?" she asked, prodding him with the tips of her boots. "It's boring. All houses and shops and soldiers and stuff. Wherever you're from is probably more interesting."

"Nah," Dante said. "Limbo City's like the island, but bigger, and shittier. Outer space, though, I've never heard about that."

Admittedly his geography was kind of lacking in general. And... most parts of his education, actually.

"It's just people, Dante," Alana told him. "We have better technology -- seriously, you guys are primitive that way -- and more sentient species, and there are these robot people with TVs for heads running around, but in the end? It's just people."

She leaned in to kiss his neck, thinking about what she was saying. "The stars seem closer there, though. I do miss that."

He stretched his arm out and draped it lazily around her shoulders. "I'll bet lots of tiny shit like that is different," Dante mused, careful to tilt his head towards her without blocking her off from his neck. That was kinda nice.

Then he rewound the conversation in his head and blinked. "...Though, really, robot TV people?"

It was kind of nice, wasn't it? Which was why Alana nipped a second kiss before she answered.

"Robot TV people," she nodded. "They're ... I dunno, we call them Bluebloods? They're all named things like Duke Robot III and Princess Robot XII. Seem pretty weird to us, too, when I think about it."

"But... what are the TVs for?"

Dante was seriously weighing the questions vs. getting in on this kissing thing, but decided that was just about weird enough to weigh things in the former case's favor.

Mara poked her head into the open door. "Sounds like you're having fun."

"Punk rock dance party," Alana informed her, still pogoing in place. "Wanna join in?"

"Sure," Mara said, grinning and bopping along immediately like the dancer she was. "What's this song?"

"'Holiday in Cambodia,'" Alana said, pausing for just long enough to double-check the display on her phone. "The band's called the Dead Kennedys. I just kind of clicked random songs until I got something that seemed stompy in a fun way."

"I like stompy fun," Mara declared, stomping along happily. "Hopefully no one's in room 202..."

Or if they were, they could come up and dance too.

"They should just feel lucky I'm not doing this after bedtime," Alana decided. "Oh, hey, thanks for saying I looked hot on radio. That was nice."

"It was true," Mara said, smiling, "but you're welcome."

"I'm pretty sure it was like 90 percent that dress," Alana said, more talking than dancing now. "It was ridiculous but a lot of fun to try on for five minutes."

"It's a fun class," Mara agreed. "I'm not exactly sure why I'm in it, but it's a fun class."

"I'm in it because it is a fun class," Alana said. "And because it's senior year, so I figure I deserve even more blow-off classes than normal. Besides, you never know when a good lie's going to come in handy."

"Like when someone's parents show up," Mara said, nodding.

"Or when you're someplace you aren't supposed to be," Alana nodded, widening her eyes for effect. "'Sorry, I was just looking for the bathroom' has gotten me out of trouble more than once."
