Room 302, Wednesday Night

Alana had been paralyzed by too many unfamiliar choices when she tried to pick a movie to watch with Raleigh. In the end, she'd blindly picked one with high ratings that sounded sort of sexy, but not in a crazy nympho kind of way.

Which was how she ended up jiggling the mouse on her laptop, trying to get Messy Mambo to finish downloading before Raleigh showed up. She'd pulled her hair into a stubby ponytail and was dressed in a cute t-shirt with cutouts for her wings and a pair of yoga pants. That seemed about right for a low-key movie date.

And Raleigh had spent way too long trying to think what kind of food was 'date maybe?' appropriate. Yancy had been no help after suggesting a variety of not so subtle phallic choices.

So, Raleigh had gone with tacos. No, he didn't realize what he'd done there. Just go with it.

He knocked on the door, leaning in to check if her roommate was around. "I don't cook," he said, holding out the bag like an apology.

Alana was mercifully alone in the room tonight, with no sign of Danny. She grinned as she went to wave Raleigh in.

She accepted the bag, pulling the top open to sniff the contents. "Me either, but this smells good. What is it?"

"Tacos," he said proudly. Who didn't love tacos?

"I am completely in favor of tacos," Alana told him. "I think I may actually be in love with them."

Earth tacos and Landfall tacos weren't exactly the same, but a taco was a taco and they were all good things.

"I'm sure one day you can make your love legal," he assured her.

"i hope so,'cause love is love," Alana said. "Guy and girl, guy and guy, girl and taco, rock monster and princess. Right?"

She took a seat on her bed as she spoke.

"Am I the rock monster or the princess in this scenario?" he asked, taking a seat next to her so he could steal a taco for himself.

"You're stuck with rock monster," Alana decided, unwrapping taco of her own. "But he's a really sweet rock monster, if that helps. Not the eating people type."

"I guess I could live with that." Maybe if they named the monster Gipsy Danger. "What movie did you pick?"

"Um, Messy Mambo? I have no idea if it's any good," Alana cautioned. "But it looked sort of fun. It's supposed to have lots of dancing and stuff."

It was a total date movie.

"I think I've caught the end of it a few times on TV," he said, nodding. "But never all the way through."

"Cool, I'm glad I didn't pick something you're sick of," Alana said. (Yep. Date.) "Gimme a second."

She poked at her computer again and -- miraculously - got the download to start playing. She sighed with relief as she settled back in her seat.

"So, the end," she said. "It's happy, right?"

She liked knowing these things ahead of time.

"Totally happy," he assured her. "There's dancing and buildings do not blow up."

"Good. But next time we can pick something with a little blowing things up," Alana decided. "Actually, now that I've had some time to think about the movie from class? I might not hate it."

"Oh?"

"Mmmhmm," Alana said, licking hot sauce off her fingers. "I still think all the people in it pretty much suck. But the whole thing about how buying things shouldn't be the most important part of your life? I liked that."

Raleigh gave that thought as he finished his taco. "That makes sense," he agreed. "Though the blowing up things..."

He didn't approve of that.

Unless it was in the process of fighting a giant monster while piloting a giant robot.

"Yeah, there are better ways to make that point than killing a bunch of people," Alana nodded. "I'm not really into random violence."

Only when somebody threatened someone she cared about.

Well, that was totally different. Then you beat the crap out of them.

"Like dancing." Thanks, movie.

"Dancing solves all the problems," Alana nodded. "We have this stupid war at home? They should just turn it into a dance-off."

"Next time we should watch the dance fighting movie." A beat. "One of them. I think there are a couple."

"Of course there are," Alana said, scooting the tiniest bit closer to him. "We can pick the best one, right? Or choose the worst one so we can laugh."

She was happy he'd mentioned next time.

"I think they're all the worst," he admitted, leaning so that she could have a solid shoulder to maybe rest against. "But it'll be fun to go through them."

"But we need to find out for sure they're absolutely the worst," Alana argued, resting her head on that shoulder. "Besides, it's important Earth culture for me, right?"

"I have a feeling I'm going to get some warped ideas if I keep hanging out with you," Alana teased.

Not that she sounded like she minded.

"You can always return the favor," he pointed out.

"I should make you watch some stuff from the Robot Kingdom," Alana mused. "They have the trashiest soap operas in the galaxy."

"You're picking the food for that one." Because he also needed to try her cuisine.

"It might be tacos again," Alana said -- and then shushed, because the movie was getting dramatic.

Raleigh grinned, turning his attention to the movie as well. "The fall break to Europe was a little like this sort of resort."

"Italy was prettier," Alana answered. "But it didn't have ridiculous staff parties. Or at least, none I got invited to. So. Fair trade?"

"Maybe our school is too weird for them to invite." That was a distinct possibility.

"Then it's their loss," Alana decided, snuggling in a tiny bit closer. "Maybe they were afraid we'd be better dancers, and couldn't stand to be upstaged."

This ... was nto so much a distinct possibility.

"Can you dance?" he asked, totally cool with the snuggling. See how cool with it he was? "I can't."

"I took lessons before my mom left," Alana shrugged. "Not exactly girly enough to get that good at it, though."

"It's not girly," Raleigh replied, watching the dancing in the movie. "It's a little like fighting. Real fighting."

"It's girly when it's a bunch of little girls twirling around in dresses," Alana answered, then gestured to the screen. "But yeah, what he's doing? Not girly at all. More like fighting."

"With a lot more lifting." That was important. And a reason to work out more.

"And a lot sexier," Alana noted. Which was also important to her.

Alana side-eyed him. "What does that mean?"

She wasn't going to jump him right that second or anything, but she really wasn't in this dating thing to be a nun. So if he had issues around sexiness...

"That I should learn to dance." A beat. "As long as I don't have to wear tights for it."

"Absolutely no tights," Alana said, then -- to tease him -- added, "Got an opinion on pants like his?"

"...circulation cutting." And oh god, he wanted to cover his crotch out of sympathy for the torture.

"You'd learn to cope," Alana said trainquilly.

"I'll stick to jeans," Raleigh replied. "I am not made for fashion."

"Jeans are fine," Alana decided. "I'm happy as long as I can move. I can't stand clothes that get in my way."
