Room 302, Wednesday Afternoon

Alana didn't know about sex pollen, but she had noticed that this week was unusually ... frustrating, and her workouts weren't taking the edge off at all.

And now, to top it off, she had a vid from Even, her new stepmother. (If you could call her that. The chick was barely five years older than Alana, and Alana was choosing to regard Even's existence in her home as the result of a persistent delusion on her father's part that was guaranteed to end any minute now, please.) Even was perky as ever, chirping out news about Alana's dad's latest trip for work and what the gossip mags were saying -- and oh, by the way, wasn't it so cool her school was having a parents weekend? She couldn't wait to visit, although Alana's dad was, of course, too busy with work. (But he sent his love, Even burbled.)

Alana clicked off the vid and dove for the D. Oswald Heist paperback she kept closest to her bed, flipping to find her place in the story almost frantically. Maybe that would give her something less completely nauseating to think about.

Since Raleigh's room had Isabelle and... someone in it, Raleigh was trying to stay away. Mostly because she was terrifying even with everything happening this week.

Even then.

He perked up at a room with an open door, knocking lightly with hopes of somewhere he could hang out a little.

"C'mon in," Alana called, barely glancing up from her novel. "Especially if you come bearing snacks."

"I could go get some if that helps?" Damn his lack of foresight!

Now Alana recognized the voice. "Nah, it's fine. I can make an exception for you."

She slid off the bed and went over to wave Raleigh in.

"My roommate has someone over," he said, tone expressing as much of the reasoning behind it as he could.

"Lucky them," Alana sighed. "So you figured I'd be in here alone, huh?"

"No, mostly just trying not to interrupt and thought I'd say hi." Also. You are very good looking Alana.

Not that Raleigh noticed that.

"Hi," Alana echoed, sounding amused. (And also noting Raleigh was very good-looking.) "I could probably use the company before I spend the whole night reading. Ever heard of J. Oswald Heist?"

"I'm going to guess he's a writer." Based off the whole reading thing.

You could take that as a no, Alana.

"Only the best writer ever," Alana informed him. "Like, my entire philosophy is in his books. They literally saved my life."

She lobbed her paperback at him. "Read this. It's new, and I need somebody to talk to about it."

"As long as you don't expect me to finish it tonight," Raleigh confirmed, looking over the book carefully. "Think anyone would complain if I slept in the common room?"

Alana shook her head. "No, it's way better if you read slow so you don't miss anything," she said.

And then, elaborately casual: "Well .... you could stay here. I don't think Danny's around anyhow."

"You sure?" Oh, this was just a recipe for disaster.

Probably, but Alana wasn't chickening out.

"Sure," she said. "I mean, you live with Isabelle, so it's not like you've never seen a girl before."

Also, she kind of wanted to jump him, but that seemed a bit sudden. She figured if he stayed it might happen more naturally.

"Just as long as you also don't try to decorate my side of the room," he replied with a quick grin.

"You got it, as long as you don't snore," Alana grinned back. "I don't know what I'd do if you snored."

"Smother me with a pillow?" That would involve being close to him in bed. That way lay madness.

"Maybe just hit you with one to start with," Alana said, after mock consideration. "I don't really want you dead."

"I'm pretty sure I don't snore at least," he replied with a grin. "My brother would never stop making fun of me if I did."

"See, so we'll get along perfect," Alana nodded. "Brother, huh? Is he coming out for the weekend?"

"Yeah," Raleigh said with a grin that wasn't tinged with anything even hinting on flirtation. Thank god. "It'll be nice to see someone from home. You got family coming in?"

"My dad's wife," Alana said, rolling her eyes the tiniest bit. "I guess I'm just glad to have somebody coming, anyhow."

"You could come hang out with Yancy and me if it sucks too bad." Yes, his name was Yancy. Raleigh got the good name.

"Maybe. You sure I wouldn't be crashing your bro bonding time?" Alana asked, smiling. She stretched out on her bed, head propped on hand.

Raleigh took a moment to remember what the question was, mouth open slightly as he looked at her. "Uh, no. No, he'll understand."

He hoped.

"I'm not normally--" This bad. Honest!

"What is it with this week?" Alana wondered. "It seems like everybody's twitchy."

That got a startled little laugh out of him. "Twitchy is a good word for it."
